3/3/2010          Final Yr 6 Multi Skill Academy Day

Lewisham School Sport Partnership is proud to announce the third successful Multi Skills Academy day which took place on 23rd February 2010. Gifted & talented pupils from year 6 attended the event from over 20 primary schools. The pupils wore their academy t shirts which they received at the first academy day, giving them a sense of belonging and importance.

The day was held at Downham Leisure Centre. The pupils were registered in the community hall where they were put into 3 groups led by an SSCO and a coach from the centre. They stayed in their group with their SSCO all day and experienced new activities and explored the leisure centre and the amazing facilities. Each activity was run by an experienced and professional coach.

The academy pupils learned life saving skills in the pool where they rescued each other from the water, learned how to calmly talk to their subjects and lead them to safety. They also had fun wearing masks & snorkels and learned how to breathe and swim under water.

Every pupil used up an amazing amount of energy in a 'spin' class. Each had their own spin bike and learned how to pace themselves & change the pressure of the bike. The class was full of fun, fast pace and great music!

Every academy pupil took part in an innovative, fun dance session with Kieran. He had every pupil laughing and dancing along with him. Every pupil was so focussed throughout t his sessions they did not want them to end! The last activity of the day was altogether back in the community hall where the pupils competed as teams in a 'dance mat' competition. This was another new experience for most, especially the teachers, parents & SSCOs!

Lunch time in the community hall was full of chatting and eating. Pupils from different schools exchanged their morning experiences and new friendships were apparent across different groups of children.

At the end of the day every pupil received a certificate and each completed an evaluation form. The results of the evaluations were so enlightening! Almost every child gave each question 10 out of 10! It was obvious that the day was a great success.

The pupils had a fantastic day and a brilliant introduction to a local leisure centre. All of the staff at the centre are very professional and accommodating. The pupils mixed well with pupils from other schools, learned how to play within a team and experienced several new activities. They were also given links to clubs and timetables of activities they may wish to pursue in their own time. This was the last academy day for this cohort of pupils. I would like to wish them all good luck in their secondary school. Their SSCO will inform their new school that they were part of this gifted & talented academy.
